Romantics: tag yourselves.
A blogger I enjoy, Matt, at Licensed to Blog, posted this survey that he created with his wife, Allison, (another blogger I like) at That’s What She Blogged. I’m not much for surveys, but this is fun, and in the spirit of the upcoming holiday, I decided to give it a whirl.
1. Describe your favorite romantic/love scene from a movie.
I LOVE movies, so I have to say that I have many favorite scenes. These are my top two from the last year:
The short film Bastille from Paris Je T’aime: about a man who learns to fall in love with his wife all over again when he learns that she is dying. The scene where he kisses her neck while she makes dinner makes me cry everytime.
In The Secret Life of Words, (from the same director as Bastille, Isabelle Coixet, strangely enough) Tim Robbins’ character is telling Sarah Poley’s that he loves her. She tells him that she can’t open herself up to him because she’s afraid that if she opens herself up again, she may experience so much sorrow that she’ll drown them both with her tears. Robbins’ clasps her in his arms and says, “I’ll learn to swim, Hanna–I swear! I’ll learn to swim!”

2. What was your worst Valentine’s Day experience?
The first year boyfriend and I were together, he overheard me go on a rant about consumerism and about how Valentine’s Day is nothing more than a vapid display of our inability as Americans to express real affection for one another without money (I was nineteen, so maybe I should be excused). He thought that he would be smart and didn’t even mention that it was Valentine’s Day. I was really looking forward to that Valentine’s Day because I had always managed to be single on Valentine’s Day–and I had never accepted a date just because of the day–so it was my first year to reallycelebrate it. I had gotten him the obligatory card (though I found a really funny one) and made homemade chocolates and cookies. When he discovered that I was just venting … that I am a girly girl deep down and do like roses (or tea with rose petals in it like the kind he bought me for V-Day last year) … he understood and made up for it spectacularly the next year.
3. What is your favorite restaurant for a Valentine’s dinner out?
I like staying in for Valentine’s Day.
4. List a hot/romantic line from a song that you like.
Only because I was listening to it yesterday (though it looks cheesy to write, when really it’s beautiful):
From Ben Fold’s “The Luckiest”
Next door there’s an old man who lived to his nineties and one day passed away in his sleep; then his wife, she stayed for a couple of days and passed away. I’m sorry, I know that’s a strange way to tell you that I know we belong. That I know that I am, I am, I am, the luckiest.
5. What is the cheesiest aspect of Valentine’s Day?
The Hallmark cards, no doubt.
6. Did you have any elementary school traditions for Valentine’s Day?
We went to the park and exchanged Valentines. The ones made by the kids who had stay at home moms (who actually made the valentines for their kids) were the best–generally Victorian looking things in giant envelopes filled with bonbons or candy hearts.
7. What fictional character do you have a crush on and why?
I think I have to agree with Allison–Mr. Darcy. He’s kind of my MBT ideal, too, though in real life we would never work. But dear lord do I love that man–oh, and Allison? Boyfriend isn’t threatened by Mr. Darcy either (yay for us!).

8. How old were you when you had your first, real kiss? Was it good or bad?
I was three. My best friend, Alejandro was walking me home in the rain with his little, yellow umbrella. Suddenly he stopped, kissed me forcefully and told me that he was going to marry me someday. Those hot-blooded Latin men, I tell ya. And yes, it was a good kiss, if I remember correctly. It’s been a couple of decades or so.
9. Describe the most uncomfortable crush someone has had on you.
Easy! One of my friend’s older brothers who was about five years old than me had a crush on me. Rather than telling me, he decided to be “honorable” and “mature.” So, two days after my fifteenth birthday when he considered me old enough to date, he sat down with my dad and told him how he felt. He told him that his feelings were serious, and that he hoped to pursue me towards marriage. He also asked me dad to ask me out for him. My dad was gracious about the whole thing–he actually liked this kid–but told him that my dating choices were up to me. My dad came to tell me about it the next day and could hardly keep a straight face but begged me to let him down gently. He even told me where this guy wanted to go on our first date. I was pissed–and told my dad that if said individual ever asked him anything about me again to tell him to man up and come to me. Maybe that was too harsh … maybe this kid was trying to be romantic … I found him creepy.
10. How long did your first heartbreak last?
Maybe a month or two? I don’t remember clearly. It was high school.
11. Do you prefer to give/receive: a) jewelry b) chocolate c) lingerie d) tools
Uh … ? I don’t know. I guess I most frequently give and receive chocolate.
12. If you are male, do you prefer Mary Ann or Ginger? If you are female, do you prefer McDreamy or McSteamy?
I dunno … I don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy. I just googled these guys for images and they both look way over-gelled.
13. Would you rather be broken up with by: a) phone b) text message c) in person d) email e) carrier pigeon
In person? I guess … I don’t know. Maybe I’d prefer that he was a jerk so it’s be easier to get over … oh, jeez! I don’t want to think about it!
14. What is your favorite Valentine’s Day candy?
Cadbury’s roses: rose-shaped chocolates filled with strawberry honey. Yummy, yummy.
